The following is an exerpt from the East Dubuque Register.

"With things such as the Internet, violent TV shows and movies and video games, bullying is becoming more and more of an issue in schools. Jim Jelinske, of Creative Education Services, travels the tri-states presenting anti-bullying programs. He wholeheartedly agrees that bullying is becoming a bigger problem. However, he said it is not so much physical bullying that is getting worse, but emotional and psychological bullying, especially in girls. He cites the Internet as a big cause of this, saying that girls can go on the Internet to spread rumors. He also believes without a doubt that the media is another cause.

"Kids will see 200,000 scenes of violence on TV before they're 18," Jelinske said. "Now it's fun to kill." Jelinske presented three separate anti-bullying sessions at East Dubuque Elementary and Junior High School on Sept. 15. while the message was the same for all three groups, Jelinske got more and more serious as the groups got older. He shared stories of people he knew, demonstrating the detrimental consequences of bullying. Jelinske did separate programs for faculty and staff of the school and parents. "Most research shows that bullying develops in elementary school, peaks in middle school, and by the time you are a junior and senior in high school, you have a better understanding," he said. "But middle school is the most brutal."

In an interactive program, Jelinske told the students that it's okay to be different. He taught three different things to do if being bullied. The first is to say "Stop!" "It's okay to say 'I don't like it when you tease me; I want you to stop,'" he said. The second step is to think.

"Don't push them back because then you're hurting them, and that doesn't work," he told the kindergartners through second graders at the first session. "Walk away, have a plan, and find a friend." The third step is to report. Tell a teacher, bus driver or parent. It's not being a tattletale, Jelinske told the students, but it could help save lives. Jelinske used stories, magic and music to help reach the students on this topic. Principal John Vesely told the school board at the regular meeting on Sept. 19 that the program taught the students how to handle different situations. "For some of the kids, the light turns on," he said.
