School Programs

Preventing Bullying and Harassment

This presentation can be divided into three segments. The following is a break down of these sections.

schools1

Youth
This can be conducted most effectively in separating grade levels (K-3, 3-5,and 6-8).Each presentation lasts approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the age group. Programs entail the realistic look at the effects of bullying and harassment and the rational and safe ways to intervene with a bully.

“It is a fact that bullying can be significantly reduced in schools
if teachers, support starff, parents and most importantly students
join together to take action against this form of harassment.”

Demonstrations with magic, role-playing and real life examples are used to help in illustrating concepts. The goal is to provide an empathic understanding to the effects that occur from harassment, as well as provide clear, simple and retainable skills to use in a bullying situation.

School Staff
This program lasts approximately 45-60 minutes and focuses on defining harassment and bullying behavior so that it is consistently addressed. The presenter provides information on signs to be aware of in school and intervention techniques to address bullying.

“1 out of 6 American students say that they were seriously traumatized by peers in school”
--National Center for Educational Statistics

The goal is to provide a consistent foundation for what behaviors constitute harassment and to reinforce the importance of follow-through on the consequences for bullying behavior. The presentation includes examples, demonstrations and stories to help teachers re-think their perspective on bullying and to understand the devastation that comes with a lack of intervention.

Parents
This program lasts approximately one hour with time for questions. Focus of this program is on providing parents with a realistic look at bullying behavior, its’ effect on children and signs to be aware of in their own children. Demonstrations are used to illustrate the dramatic effects teasing can have even if it is “kidding”. Parents are provided with specific interventions to stop bullying and techniques to provide their children in order to recognize and deal with bullying behavior.

“10% of students drop out of school because of repeated bullying.”
-National School Safety Center

The attitudes and behavior of teachers, parents and students are decisive factors in preventing teasing and bullying behaviors, as well as redirecting such behaviors into more positive actions.
